The small town of Oberndorf Bei Salzburg is located about 15 km north of Salzburg, along the Salzach river valley and on the border with Germany. The small town is known throughout the world for being the place, in the church of San Nicola in Oberndorf, where the famous Christmas song “Silent Night” (in German “Stille Nacht”), the original church was destroyed at the end of the 19th century by a flood of the river, today in its place there is a memorial chapel built in 1937. Usually the Oberndorf Bei Salzburg Christmas Market takes place from Thursday to Sunday.

1) The Oberndorf Bei Salzburg Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt am Stille-Nacht-Platz). The market takes place right in front of the memorial chapel. Small market but with a great atmosphere in an idyllic setting. There are handicrafts on display, including Christmas-themed wood carvings, handmade Christmas decorations. Music dominates the market where you can taste roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.
