The city developed in the Middle Ages at the crossroads of two important communication routes, the one with Italy and the Alps and the one between Cologne and Prague. Between the 13th and 16th centuries the city was one of the capitals of Hesse. A land of fervent Protestants, the oldest Protestant university in the world was founded here in 1527.
