Lake Bled is one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in Slovenia. The lake, which has glacial origins, is nestled in the mountains of Slovenia at about 450 meters above sea level. Lake Bled measures about 2.1 km long and 1.4 km wide and has a total surface area of 1.45 km² and a maximum depth of 30 m. In summer (July and August), its waters reach temperatures that sometimes reach around 25 °C, while in winter the lake waters sometimes freeze. A small island, called Blejski otok, characterizes the lake. On the island there is a church (Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja) with Gothic frescoes whose construction dates back to the Middle Ages, but whose current appearance is that given to it in the 17th century. On a cliff overlooking the lake is the imposing Bled Castle (Blejski grad), the castle has medieval origins, but parts of the building were built in the Renaissance.
