An ancient city of medieval origin in Lower Saxony, Göttingen (Göttingen) was part of the Hanseatic League in the 14th century, becoming an important merchant city along the commercial road that connected Lübeck to Frankfurt am Main.
The city is today known for its ancient and renowned university, founded in the 18th century. Saved from the bombings that devastated many German cities during the Second World War, Göttingen has a beautiful historic center with an ancient medieval town hall and a famous fountain, the “Gänseliesel”, the fountain of the maiden with the two geese symbol of the city.
