Gothenburg (Göteborg) is, in size and importance, after Stockholm, the second largest city in Sweden, Gothenburg is also the most important port in Sweden. The city is located in southern Sweden, along the banks of the Kattagat. During the Christmas season the city is a show of lights and illuminations. In particular, the period around the feast of Saint Lucia (13 December), the most heartfelt feast by the Swedes, is not to be missed. The Gothenburg Christmas Market is one of the city’s major events during the Christmas holidays.
GOTHENBURG CHRISTMAS MARKET
1) Christmas markets in the city centre. Christmas markets usually held during the advent weeks in the Kronhuset, the old town hall (Kronhuset Julmarknad), in the Nordstan (Nordstan Julmarknad), and in the Haga district, the oldest district of the city (Haga Julmarknad).
2) Liseberg Christmas Market (Jul på Liseberg). Christmas market with about 80 wooden houses, one of the largest in all of Sweden, which is usually held in the famous amusement park for adults and children of Liseberg in Gothenburg. The market presents the typical foods of the Swedish Christmas gastronomic tradition, Christmas objects, toys and many objects and activities for children.
3) Tjolöholms Slott Christmas Market (Julmarknad pa Tjolöholms Slott). This stately home located about 45km south of Gothenburg is usually the site of one of the largest Christmas markets in western Sweden, with hundreds of displays of locally produced handicrafts and food delicacies. Santa Claus will receive the children in the castle hall. Various activities are offered every day.
